Diabetes along with other non-communicable diseases are significant public health challenges of the 21st century and a leading threat to human development. An estimated 8 to 14 million people die prematurely every yearin developing countries due to preventable non-communicable diseases.
According to the International Diabetes Federation Atlas 4thEdition, diabetesalready accounts for over 9% of all deaths in the adult population in the Southand Central American region and its prevalence is expected to increase by 65% in the next two decades. In the Caribbean region, diabetes prevalence ranges between 10% and 12% in the adult population; Brazil and Mexico rank among the world’s top 10 countries with the largest population of people with diabetes.
It has a propensity to impact the poorest and most vulnerable people in low-income countries and imposes a heavy burden on socio-economic development, yet prevention and control of diabetes remain neglected and grossly underfunded.
The Diabetes Summit for Latin America is hosted by the World Diabetes Foundation (WDF), with co-sponsorship of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), and the Brazilian Ministry of Health.
The summit is supported by a wide range of organisations, notably the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), the World Bank, Asociacion Latino Americano De Diabetes (ALAD), Associação Nacional de Assistência ao Diabético (ANAD), Federação Nacional de Associações e Entidades deDiabetes (FENAD); Associacão de Diabetes Juvenil (ADJ); Sociedad Cubana deDiabetes, Instituto Nacional de Endocrinologia & Ministry of Health, Cuba, the Caribbean Food and Nutrition Institute (CFNI), the Ibero-American Development Programme for Science and Technology (CYTED) and Fundación para la Diabetes Spain.
The aim of this summit is to serve as a forum where key stakeholders in the area of non-communicable diseases, key opinion leaders, World Diabetes Foundation partners and international media can interact in order to create a network of committed influencers who can drive the agenda on prevention and care in the developing world. The summit will encourage governments worldwide, policy makers, and funding bodies to prioritise prevention and care, by allowing the implementation of much-needed sustainable and far-reaching solutions.

The 6th WCPD provides a great opportunity to enable a more effective communication between all people interested in diabetes prevention and its management. It offers the opportunity to learn from the experiences of others especially discussing barriers encountered during prevention programme implementation.
Our aim is to have the translation of what we have learned in Science into practical skills of prevention. We want to encourage the adoption of best practices in diabetes prevention involving a good partnership between all relevant players. Effective primary prevention is essential to reduce the epidemic of type 2 diabetes throughout the world. To achieve this, action is needed not only in the field of policy making but also in the development of targeted intervention programmes which address the needs of people with an increased risk of diabetes, clinical- and community-based healthcare professionals and the general population.

The annual courses will be based on the knowledge and structure of treatment offered by the specialised diabetic foot clinic at the University Hospital of Pisa.
By combining lectures from different specialists and individual training in the clinic, course participants will gain insight in both the theory of the field and the practical methods used in the clinic.
As an addition to the previous Italian course, the international courses will focus on the structure of treatment and guidelines for establishing a diabetic foot clinic. Thereby, the courses reach out to clinicians as well as hospital department or clinic management.
By offering the courses to an international audience, the organisers aim to support the implementation of the European consensus on treatment of the diabetic foot, based on the existing guidelines. The courses will be used as a basis for building up an international educational network within the area and for raising political awareness of the challenges related to treatment and prevention of the diabetic foot.
